Minnie Punt, Mother Russia win stakes at Belmont
NEW YORK (AP) Minnie Punt and Mother Russia won $75,000 divisions of the New York Stallion Stakes for 3-year-olds on the turf at Belmont Park on Sunday.
Minnie Punt pulled off a 28-1 upset in the Spectacular Bid for colts and geldings while Mother Russia prevailed as the even-money favorite in the filly division, the Cupecoy's Joy.
Minnie Punt beat Uncle T Seven by 2\\ lengths for the gelding's second win in three starts. John Velazquez was aboard for trainer Mike Miceli as Minnie Punt ran the seven furlongs in 1:22.62, paying $58.50 to win.
Mother Russia defeated Wild Awake by two lengths in 1:23.86. Ramon Dominguez rode for trainer Linda Rice as Mother Russia improved to 4-for-6, paying $4.50 to win.
